In the PC/UNIX world, different types of data are stored as separate tables in a relational database.
In the mainframe and midrange environments, different types of data can be stored in one table. This is known as "mixed record sets." This is achieved by designating one field of the data as a "data type" field.
For example:
Record #1 of the dataset may be name and address information of a customer database. Record #2 of the dataset could be accounts recievable information.
Record #1 would have an identifier embedded in the record that tells the application that the record contains name and address information, not recievables information.
In a relational database (PC/UNIX), the accounts recievable information and the name and address information would be stored in different tables. A key, or unique identifier is used to bring the data together for processing.
UCSI can take "mixed records" and transform them into a relational database or a set of tables for import into most any modern PC/UNIX database. Additionally, UCSI can build the front-end application to manipulate the converted mixed records in MS-Access, FoxPro and other common PC based database programs.
